On January 6, 2021 Cor passed away peacefully in his 90th year at Headwaters Health Care Centre, Orangeville, ON. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Catharina (1996). Left to deeply mourn his loss are Anthony (Dawn), Karen (Tim), Mark (Alison) and Miriam (Allen), his grandchildren Jacqueline, Bradley, Corey, Lauren, Katherine, David, Nicolas and Rachel, and his great-grandchildren Rhett and Hennessy.

Cor and Catharina came to Canada from Holland in 1954 and loved their new country. Their greatest satisfaction came from seeing their children graduate from university. Because of World War II Cor received less than 6 years of primary education. By attending night classes for 8 years in Hamilton and taking extension courses (McMaster and University of Waterloo) he attained a higher education. He compiled a family history and wrote a monthly column for the Feather Fancier titled ‘Notes from the Smallhold’.

Cor enjoyed his rabbits, chickens, pigeons, paintings and woodcarvings, but above all his back-yard garden. We will miss his keen sense of humour and his love for his family.

A private family funeral will be held at Hyde & Mott Chapel with interment at Hagersville Cemetery.  A special thank you to Dr. Akula, the nurses and staff of E-wing at the Headwaters Health Care Centre for their exceptional care.  Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, whom he admired as the one Christian organization to practice Christianity.

“The Smallhold” just got a lot smaller.

Dear VanSchie family: Our deepest condolences in the death of your Father - he was a great man a true gentleman and a dear friend to us. Always a big smile and a proud Canadian - He also missed your Mom so much.
Cor and I became friends through the Poultry club and because of where we lived he would occasionally stop in for a quick visit when going to Simcoe - although he never wanted a cup of coffee which I always question as to his true Dutch heritage.
May you always cherish the memories of your Dad and hold them dearly in your hearts.

My deepest condolences to your family on the passing of your Dad, my cousin. Growing up as neighbours in two large families, your dad being the oldest of the eleven and me being the fifth oldest of eight, led to many family gatherings and fun times. I remember him riding his bike past my place to go practice playing the xylophone down the way. He and my brother Eric were always chumming around and grew up as close cousins. I had a wonderful time seeing him in July of 2018 when my son took me to a family event in Windsor and we stopped by to visit and have a tea. It is a cherished memory of mine.

Your dad was a great man and I will miss having those phone conversations that we made to each other to reminisce about old times and to catch up on current going ons in each others families. May he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Miriam and the van Schie family,
It was so thoughtful of you Miriam to call us and inform us of your Dad's passing. We are so saddened to learn of his death. Cor was such a talented person, lived his life to the fullest, and we always looked forward to his correspondence. His letters were so informative about our Wiering relatives in the Netherlands, and Cor's experiences growing up, written with his unique sense of humor. We have saved and cherish all his letters to us. Our contact with Cor was limited, but we will truly miss him. He was a remarkable person. We were so thrilled to meet him and you Miriam in person when we traveled through Toronto, and the effort you both made to travel through heavy city traffic to locate us at the hotel. We are so grateful we had the opportunity.
We extend our sincere sympathy, and our spirit is with you as you mourn your loss. Cor is at peace now, and enjoying the happiness of heaven, and joined once again with his beloved Catharina.

Blessed be his memory,
John and Dorothy (Wiering) Gockowski - 2nd cousin
