Ruby Annie McCarroll
January 28, 1925 – March 30, 2020

Passed away peacefully at West Haldimand General Hospital.  Loving mother of Michael, mother-in-law of Sabrina, dear grandmother of William.  Predeceased by husband Don, sister Myrtle Johnson, parents Ben and Pearl Johnson.  Ruby was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years in Haldimand County.  Following her retirement Ruby enjoyed volunteer work including Haldimand-Norfolk Senior Support Services, West Haldimand General Hospital, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164, and Hagersville United Church.  Ruby was also pianist and organist for many years at Hagersville Baptist Church.  The family wishes to thank Ruby’s many friends for their visits and phone calls to her during the past few years, the staff and residents at Anson Place for their dedication and friendship, and the staff in the ER and on the 3rd floor at West Haldimand General Hospital for their care during Ruby’s stays over the past few weeks.  As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to Haldimand-Norfolk Senior Support Services, West Haldimand General Hospital Foundation, or the charity of your choice.  Due to current health measures implemented by the provincial government a public service is not planned at this time.  Ruby loved music, coffee, and socializing with friends.  To celebrate Ruby’s life at this time we ask that you listen to your favourite music with your favourite drink in hand and share memories of Ruby with a close friend or family member.  Arrangements by Hyde & Mott Chapel, Hagersville. www.rhbanderson.com

Ruby... Ruby... Ruby... what a funny, lively little spitfire she was... she loved her family and friends with her whole heart. She loved to tell stories about her beloved grandson, the apple of her eye no doubt. She had fire, that's for sure, but I always loved her humour and her zest. I first met Ruby when we moved to Hagersville, now over 23 years ago, when our first of 3 kids was a new baby. I always loved to meet up with her, have a RUBY HUG, hear that great laugh!!! She will be missed by many, of that I am certain. Rest Easy Ruby, you had a life well-lived, and we will all miss you. I will drink a toast to you my friend, Godspeed on your journey to your next great adventure. Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss of your Mom/Grandmother. Cheers Ruby... Rest Easy sweet Lady... xo xo

Ruby was a driver for my mom to attend the Day Away Program in Simcoe....she was so kind and caring. We knew Ruby through the VanLoon family of whom she was related by marriage. She was also interested in the graduates of HSS as she taught many of them in public school. I would always send her a commencement program for many years. We are sorry for your loss Michael & family.

Mike, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was my Grade 6 teacher but, more than that, Ruby and Don were good friends of my mom and dad, Edna and Ess. I remember many times in our younger years when our parents got together to play cards at each other's homes, while you, Bill and I played together. It was a very long time ago but still fondly recalled. My mom sends her heartfelt condolences as well. Thinking of you.

Sincere Sympathy Michael, Sabrina and William - your dear mother was my teacher through Grade 2 to 8 at Jennings many years ago, and where I was then known as Jean Cripps. We became closely connected again when we ran into each other at Anson Place, where relatives of mine were staying. We have had several wonderful years of renewing our acquaintances together, also frequent telephone calls, visits, and lunches together. Rest in Peace dear Ruby, you will be missed.

She was a wonderful lady; she taught my sister and brother many years ago. I got acquainted with her at Highway Church Seniors and considered her a friend. We shared a few lunches together at some of her favourite local restaurants. My sympathy is extended to her family.

To Michael, Sabrina and William

Though I've only known Ruby for a small portion of her 95 years she very quickly became a sweet dear friend of mine. She was always a vibrant part of our seniors dinners at Highway Church and we looked forward to hearing her play the piano. I will miss exploring local restaurants with her, but most of all sharing Our Daily Bread and praying together. I find comfort in knowing that she is with Jesus.

Will truly be missed.

Lucy

Dear Mike, Sabrina and William: Please accept my deepest sympathies at the loss of your Mom, Mother in law and Grand mother. I remember meeting her once so many years ago. She had a twinkle in her eye and was full of fire. I was reading all the memories that were shared and she was well loved and she loved all of you. I am sure she was raised up on eagles wings. May the memories that you have in your heart give you comfort at this sad time. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace.

Dear Michael and family...
Sending sincere sympathy at this time. May all of her wonderful memories live forever in your hearts.
Miss Johnson was my grade 6 teacher. I loved her. I respected her. She had a nickname for me that only her and I shared.. Years later on the streets of Hagersville we both remembered and laughed about that.
She loved you Michael and was so proud of you and your family. You were her miracle baby!!!
Heaven gained another angel.

Dear Michael and family, Ruby was my grade 5/6 teacher (until she went on maternity leave prior to Mike's birth) and a neighbour to my parents for many years. I also met Ruby and chatted with her many times when she and my mother were both at Anson Place. I have many fond memories of the whole McCarroll family, Ruby, Don, and Michael. My most heartfelt condolences to all of you at this difficult time.

Michael & family........we were so sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing. Robert went to see her not that long ago and had a good visit. She was wanting to part with some of her treasures. She talked about you and your family and it was obvious how much she loved you all. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Michael & family, My last visit with your Mom was at Giant Tiger the day before her 95th birthday. I quickly got a card made and delivered it to her at Anson Place the day of her birthday - the staff said she was out so I just left the card to be delivered. I remember how she was good to our former neighbour Alice Bruder taking her to her dentist in the east end of Hamilton and other appointments as well. Most of all I remember your Mom often gathering Alice, Lena & Jean to go out for a meal. Alice enjoyed this outing so much. Alice is in Cedarwood Village & when I see her next time I will tell her about your Mom's passing. With our sympathy. Adolph & Sandra (and Alice Bruder)

I first met Ruby at the Simcoe Day Program. She was a volunteer drive and she had a lovely demeanor with the clients.Years later I met her again when I was working at Anson Place and she was still volunteering with SSS! She would meet friends, Lena etc.for weekly dinners and she did all the driving.
I was happy to eventually be able to help keep her active and involved as a Resident at Anson. She will be fondly remembered by so many for her smile, her laughter and her kind heart. May she Rest in Peace.

April 25,2020 Just read about Miss Johnson(Ruby)as I knew her as my teacher for my public school years. A good and wise teacher from 1945 on at S.S.#5 Walpole. The article was in the National Post and very informative. She had a life well-lived and I was thankful she had a family to whom I extend my sincere sympathy at this time.
