My heartfelt condolences to Lynda, Adam and all of your families. I've only known Mike for about 7 years through the tire business but I have some wonderful memories in that short time. Mike was extremely dedicated, loyal, generous and caring. I know from my discussions with Mike how much he loved his family. He was great to be around. I know he'll be missed by hundreds of people who got to know Mike through the tire recycling business. May God bless all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Ron Carlson

On behalf of the entire OTS team, and myself personally, I'd like to extend our sincerest condolences to the entire Moffatt family. Mike was a towering figure in the scrap tire business and an entrepreneur who had forgotten more than many will ever know about the industry. His hard work, know-how and bottomless good humor earned him the deep respect and admiration of those around him. I know that he will be dearly missed by many, none more so than those closest to him. Our thoughts are with the entire family during this difficult time.

On behalf of everyone at Moose Creek Tire Recycling/Trillium Tire, I would like to offer our thoughts and prayers to the Moffatt family. Mike was a fixture of the waste tire industry in Ontario. He was someone that we all knew, someone we spent time with, did business with, laughed with, argued with, and competed with. Ultimately, he was a person that we all learned a great deal from, and all of us in our small industry are the better for having had the opportunity to know him. His wit, energy, and infectious sense of humor will be deeply missed. Our sincerest condolences to Mike's family at their time of sorrow.

Dear Linda and family, I would like to extend my sincerest condolences with the passing of Mike. For a few years we made a couple of dives together, but he was very often in my memory and will be. I once wrote a short story in which Mike is mentioned. I am not sure if this is the time and the place for it but I would like to dedicate it to Mike. he won't be forgotten.

MAPLE LEAF

Working as a dive-instructor at a dive shop on a Caribbean Island like Curaçao, most times is shear fun. People visiting us most times only have one goal, they want to make as many enjoyable dives as possible. As dive professionals we share the same interest and therefore friendships are made very easily and sometimes even last for life. At the end of their stay, guests very often like to show their appreciation in providing us with a most times more than generous tip. I do like a few bucks extra at the end of the month but for myself, even more than money, I am enjoying the small presents we sometimes receive as a token of appreciation.

Captain ´Sea Tow´ Less handed me a company-baseball cap and ´Popeye´, proud to be a citizen of Canadian State Ontario, provided me with a T-shirt decorated with the Ontario Coat of Arms.
Every year again when visiting beautiful Curaçao, Jim and Julie, two avid divers from Chicago, invite me to join them for dinner. While diving with us David, a captain of a Colorado fire brigade, together with his wife Lori and daughter Ali, invited me several times to join them for Thanksgiving Day dinner at their hotel.
Dick is a former fighter pilot and Korean and Vietnam War Veteran whom I trained to be a divemaster. And after every dive we had a feast on a large and delicious home made fruit salad his wife Connie provided us with.
Every time they visit Curaçao, Canadian citizens Mike and Linda hand me a with a kind of solemn gesture, a beautiful slender shaped blue coloured bottle of Canadian Ice-wine.
Anna, a lovely young German lady handed to me as a good luck charm a turquoise, a beautiful bluish, green coloured gemstone, when she heard I was leaving Curaçao for a motorcycle tour in the northern part of India,
These are only a few examples and I easily could mention many more. On the other hand there are sometimes also divers that provide you only with a tremendous headache, due to their bad attitude towards diving and safety regulations. But that goes with the job.

One morning a gentleman in his fifties, together with his wife, entered our dive shop. The man made some inquiries about diving, but when I asked if he perhaps would like to join us for a dive, he told me that, due to medical restrictions, he was no longer allowed to dive. When meeting visitors from abroad, out of politeness one often asks from which country the visitors originate. Today was no exception. The visitor told me they were Canadian citizens. To that I replied that their native country to me was very special. When visiting a foreign country one often is approached in such a friendly, tip money hustling manner of speech and I immediately recognized on the man’s face a glimpse of `yeah, sure, I heard that story one time to many´.

But this time I was not making small talk. I was telling the plain truth because I still cherish precious memories on the first kiss I ever exchanged with a girl. Many years ago, a young and shy sixteen year old Dutch teenager was passionately kissed by Shirley, a young Canadian girl. As a junior citizen of Moose Jaw, a small town in the province of Saskatchewan, she was on a sightseeing tour in Holland.
I told the Canadian visitor here home address which I remembered quite well, even after more than thirty five years. Being familiar with the town, the man was very impressed. ‘Well, when you still can remember all those details, than it must have been a hell of a kiss,’ the man replied with a big smile on his face. I only could affirm what he said so with an even bigger smile I replied ‘Yes sir, it was, it really was!’ We had a good laugh and after that they left for the bar.

The next morning the gentleman, together with his wife, returned to the dive shop and with a big smile he handed me a Canadian national flag Maple Leaf pin. `You have earned it´, he grinned as he told me he had enjoyed my detailed real-life story very much. While looking in admiration to his wife he said: ‘You should have sticked to that girl, because Canadian women are the best.’ That night at my house, in my Ontario T-shirt with the Maple Leaf-pin attached to it, I searched the Internet for a Canadian radio station and opened the one bottle of Ice-wine which I head kept for occasions like tonight. I sipped Mikes magical Canadian winter gift and found myself listening to Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal Radio Network. And for an hour or so I was back in the seventies, back on Memory Lane. Never thought that would happen to me while diving on Dushi Korsou.
