Lionel Joseph Wilfrid Gagnon

On the morning of September 18th 2021, surrounded by his loved ones, Lionel Joseph Wilfrid Gagnon, 71 years of age, was called home to “meet God” after having bravely and humbly fought a long and arduous battle with cancer.

Lionel was predeceased by his parents Mathias and Irène (née Poiron) Gagnon. He is survived by Yvette (née Fluet) his beloved wife of nearly 52 years and by their 4 cherished children: Paul (Carolyne Gauthier), Rennée (Stephen Cady), Daneige (Jeffrey Casciato) and Julie (Chad Nock). He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 4 step-grand children and 2 great-grand-children, all of whom he was very proud; as well as one brother: Charles (Pauline Roy) and five sisters: Rolande (Louis Sibileau), Thérèse Gagnon, Claudette (Fred Lavigne), Louise Gagnon, and Diane (André Thériault), and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lionel will long be remembered by his community, friends and family as an example of love, strength, loyalty, fortitude, compassion, charity and joy. He was a constant and reliable resource for us growing-up and to-this-day; our go-to for practical advice, clear thinking and a helping hand. Rest in peace, “chéri, dad, pépère, chief, DaBoss”.

Visitation will be held on Friday September 24th, from 2 to 4pm, and from 7 to 9pm, at Hyde & Mott Chapel of R.H.B. Anderson Funeral Homes, 60 Main St. S, Hagersville, ON, N0A 1H0.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Vincent D’Souza O.C.D. and livestreamed, on September 25th, at 9:30am at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, 94 Main St. S., Hagersville, ON, N0A 1H0. Interment will take place following the Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery, 620 Governors Rd. E, Paris, ON, N3L 3E1. A small reception will follow in Brantford at an address to be communicated.

We are very grateful to all the doctors, nurses and hospital staff who ministered to him and cared for him and for his family throughout his illness.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Juravinski Cancer Centre, or to the Juravinski Urology Department or to the West Haldimand General Hospital.

*A link to the Livestreamed Mass will be provided by the family on or before Friday morning.

I will always remember Lionel as a man with a very humorous side. You had to really pay attention but you were often the subject of his jokes - which made me laugh even more! To all members of the Gagnon, Fluet and Nock families, please know that we will remember dear Lionel with kindness and love in our hearts and each Spring as I prepare my garden for the bounty and glory that that time of the year brings, I will look to the Statue of St. Francis and always smile. With love Elizabeth, Emma and Sara Lorenzin. xoxo

My heart breaks for you all, I wish I was home sooner to have been a support for the family… especially for Yvette losing the love of her entire life, as she was for me when I lost my mom. I’m so sorry, so incredibly sorry.
