 Larry Andrew Smith

May 8, 1936 - March 7, 2026

Larry Andrew Smith passed peacefully on March 7, 2026 at his home in Hagersville in his 90th year. Larry is predeceased by his parents Calvin and Olive Smith. Larry married the love of his life, Molly Elizabeth Jackson, on October 21, 1961, and have been celebrating together for 64 years.

Larry is survived by his brother Wayne Smith, and wife Jo-Anne.
Loving father to Scott Smith (Toni), Trevor Smith (Bev), Sally Smith, and Aaron Smith (Heidi).  Dearest grandfather to Callum, Carly, and Cassidy Smith, Trevor Jr. Smith, Sydney and Michael Almas, Megan and Alyse Baxter, Jacob, Olivia, and Adam Smith.

Great grandpa to Blake Smith, and predeceased by baby Claire Almas.

Larry attended Moler Barber School in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1957-1958 where friends Jim Willis, Jim Misner, and Jim Dickson also went. Then Jim Dickson and Larry went on to hairstyling in Hamilton. They worked side by side at Jim and Larry’s Barber Shop, and then The Clipper Ship, for 50 years.  Larry truly enjoyed his work and lifelong friendships he made over his 59 years of barbering, up to the age of 80 when he put down his clippers for a new golf club.

Larry and Jim had a habit of dropping by the Hagersville Legion to meet with friends, have a chat, and a sip. They were both members for 60+ years.

Larry was a Hydro Director for 16 years with Haldimand Hydro and enjoyed those he was fortunate enough to work with.

Larry played hockey and skated into his 80’s. He was awarded in 1981 for representing what minor hockey is all about.  He served many years as treasurer, paying those he hired as ticket takers and time keepers to help the game go on. Larry’s love for sport lead him to assisting the learn-to -skate and power skating programs with Grace McKeen for many years.

Larry was an avid golfer, a member of Sundrim Golf Club, and later MontHill Golf and Country Club. His Friends and players meant the world to him.

Larry’s enjoyment of friends and travel took him and Molly on many trips. Florida, Alaska, Cuba, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Vancouver, and bus trips with Topplane Travel to Nashville, Tennessee and Branson, Missouri.  He loved our beautiful north and most of all, boating with our family and friends at Woodlawn, and golfing wherever he could go.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Juravinski Hospital, and Dr. Wasi, Dr. Sienna and their team at the Cancer Centre. Thanks to West Haldimand General Hospital Emergency Department, Dr. Cloete, Dr. Yar, and the in-patient department. Sincerest thank you to our home care team, namely nurse Clysen, CBI Home Heath, and Dr. Sault from Stedman Outreach Team.

The family will honour Larry’s life with a visitation at Hyde and Mott Chapel, 60 Main St. South Hagersville from 2-4 and 6-8 on Saturday March 14, 2026. There will be a gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164, 5 Almas Street North Hagersville on Sunday March 15, 2026 for a Celebration of Life at 2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hagersville Minor Hockey Association and Hagersville Skating Club would be much appreciated by the family.

Condolences

Molly,Scott,Trevor,Sally and Aaron I’m so sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. Hagersville just won’t be the same without him. He was such a fixture around town even after he retired. I don’t know how many times I would see him out riding his bike-he put a lot of miles on that thing. He was as such a friendly, warm and happy guy to visit with. What stands out the most to me was how much he loved spending time with his family and how proud he was of them. He will definitely be missed by many people.

Heartfelt condolences to Molly, Scott, Trevor, Sally, Aaron and families
Larry had a zest for life
Always wore a smile
A joy to be in his company
Proud of his family and pleasant and sociable to all who crossed his path
As a neighbor, Larry was impossible to surpass in being the first on Church Street to cut the grass every spring,
and put up the Christmas lights before the first snow
Will be deeply missed

The bicycle path around town will never be the same without Larry's friendly smile and wave. Sometimes you were privileged to have him stop to have a chat. Always asking how everyone was doing. Very blessed to have known him for many many years, he will certainly be missed. Rest easy now Larry.
Thinking of you at this sad time.

Karen and I would like to extend our most sincere condolences to the entire Smith family. Larry was a most wonderful friend and Church Street neighbour. Reflecting back, he cut four generations of Sitter heads, and had mine in his hands for as far back as I can remember. Hagersville will never be the same without Larry in it, and we will never again get to enjoy the sight of Larry on his bicycle. Most remarkably, Larry's shining personality was always front and center, which made it such a treat to visit with him. A true gentleman and gem of a man, he will be missed more than words can say.
