I am Joseph Gerard's older brother and left home when Gerard was 6 years of age. Gerard spent one to two years in the Shrine Hospital in Spokane Washington, USA. It is not often a Canadian will go to the USA for medical treatment, but the Shriners made this possible. The treatment was to stay off his hips by being confined to a wheel chair. When he came home after a long stay in Spokane, a number of his six siblings kept Gerard on the couch while they all raced up and down the hallways in his wheelchair. Gerard would often call out to the referee, our mother pleading, "Mom they won't give me back my wheelchair. I can still do wheelies on a wheelchair to this day.
The wheelchair caused Gerard to develop a strong upper body as a child and into his adulthood. His medical challenges as a child laid a foundation on how he approached life. Gerard was a fighter. He fought the Cancer with dignity and acceptance. He sought to understand God's purpose to once again face the medical challenges before him. He loved God, and his savior Jesus Christ. Nadene, Gerard's wife stood by his side, to which we and Gerard are eternally grateful. Gerard's children stood my his side and brought rest to him. The last 12 years of his marriage to Nadene are the happiest years of his life, and I know this because Gerard told me so. Sasha and her families close proximity was a great joy for Gerard. I say this not taking away any joy that his other children brought into his life.
These last years as I made an effort to reach out to Gerard and get to know him more fully has brought me great happiness and some regrets. I wish I had made more of an effort many years before this time, to reach out to Gerard. Life is a journey and it passes by much to quickly. I will give you some wise words from an old man, "At the end of the day it is family that becomes most import to us personally. Love all the members of your families and reach out to them, and learn to know and accept them." Farewell my brother till we meet again. Bernard

Une nouvelle qui m'attriste, d'un cousin qui l'a cotoyé alors qu'il avait 9 et 11 ans, lors de deux passages à Kinnaird. Mes condoléances à toutes les personnes touchées par ce départ. Pierre

We were blessed to have known Gerard for the last couple years through a mutual friend. We are blessed that some of his carpentry tools will continue to be used to train youth here in Guatemala. We are so very sorry for your loss Nadene and family but know that Gerard’s memory and love of carpentry will continue here with our youth and in our community. Prayers for strength and peace during this time in all of your lives.

My dearest cousin Nadene was so very happy these past years with Gerard and his family… they truly were made for each other. God knew what he was doing bringing them back together at this time. They needed each other to find happiness. Sending our deepest condolences to Nadene and family. Wish there was something we could do or say to make it easier. Love you.
