Donald Wesley Monture
February 4, 1935 – February 15, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend Don Monture after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  After 39 long years, he is finally reunited with the love of his life, Carole.  Don was a member of the Mohawk Nation, Bear clan, born and raised on Fourth Line “down by the tracks,” and a proud graduate of SS #6.  He is predeceased by his mother Edith (Anderson) Monture and father Claybran Monture, brothers Bud (Irene) and Gilbert Monture, and brother-in-law Jack Frohman.  Don was a much-loved son-in-law to the late Elam and Ruby Frohman.  Don leaves behind his son Rick (Jennie), grandson and best friend Wesley, twin brother Ron (late Belva), sister Helen Moses (late Russell), sister-in-laws Susan Kruse (late Roland), Peggy Sanderson (Rick), and Ann Frohman, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces from across Turtle Island.  Our family expresses our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the amazing care that Don received from the Six Nations Home & Community Care Team, Six Nations Palliative Team, and the Iroquois Lodge.  He was a long-time employee at CGC in Hagersville and a member of Hiram #319 AF@AM.  Don was extremely honoured to serve his community and sat on various boards and organizations including the Six Nations Fair Board, Six Nations Arena Board, Six Nations Saddle Club, Six Nations Bicentennial Committee, the Six Nations Veteran’s Association, Six Nations Police Commission, Chiefswood Restoration Committee, Six Nations Genealogy and History Circles, and was a warden for St. John’s Anglican Church. He was an artist, woodworker, moccasin maker, and potter and an avid sports fan who cheered on the Ticats, Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, and the Bills.  “Big D” will be remembered for his positivity, lovable nature, sense of humour, and enthusiasm for the history of our people and our community.  He loved to travel and covered many miles, from Newfoundland to California, the Northwest Territories and Rocky Mountains to Mexico, but was always glad to return to “God’s Country” – the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory.  We love him and will miss him.  Carole has her man back.

Public visitation will be held at Styres Funeral Home on Wednesday February 16 from 6-8pm, with graveside service taking place at St. John’s Anglican Church (Ohsweken) at 12noon Thursday February 17. COVID-19 protocols in effect. Donations can be made to St. John’s Anglican Church Restoration Fund and Six Nations Veterans Association. A celebration of life will be announced by the family at a later date.

To all the Monture families,
My wife Kathy and I would like to take this opportunity to send our deepest condolences on the loss of a great man. I worked at CGC with Don for around 30 years and was fortunate enough to experience his wisdom and humour on many occasions and learned many many things as he was always willing to share his ways. I also worked with his brother Bud and twin brother Ron and worked very closely with his nephew Ron Jr. for 30+ years also. I got to know all of these guys quite well and carried a great deal of respect for them all. Don even stopped by to visit me on occasion after he retired. He will certainly be missed by all.

Respectfully,
Paul and Kathy Smelser

To everyone who looked to Don for his wisdom, his respect, his care, his humour, his friendship and most of all his love, I send you all me deepest sympathies at the news of his passing. I too worked at CGC when Don was there and was always happy to spend a few minutes of my day talking to him when our paths happened to cross. I was amazed often at hearing about all of his adventures from himself, and from other people who knew him, including his twin brother Ron. What a tremendous life he lived and I will always remember how kind and generous he was to the people he met, and to the people who he surrounded himself with in life. May his spirit always bring a smile to your face and his love of living every day to its fullest help you to find peace in knowing that he is with you always and that his presence in your life has been a true blessing.
Sincerely,
Paul Doughty.

He was inspiration to many who came to the Six Nations Genealogy. He was a long time member, who guided many to know their lineage. He & Ron were our history gems. He had shared so much each time we, had gathered. Don's presence will be greatly missed.

From big sister Helen:

"How very lucky I was to be the older sister of Don and Ron. They were always so thoughtful of me and always a big part of all my pleasant memories of our growing up years together. Russ and I always looked forward to our visits home and fun times with Don and Carole. Rest in peace, Don, and know how much you were loved. I know at last you and Carole are together in love once again."

And from nephews Jim & John:

"Our most cherished childhood memories are of summers and other visits back home on the reserve. Uncle Don and Aunt Carole and cousin Rick were such a big part of that. Such beautiful memories. We remember gifts given like Star Trek books, and peering through Uncle Don's telescope at the stars and moon overhead. To Rick and Jennie and young Wes: take good care and know what a legacy Uncle Don leaves as a kind and gentle man."

Rick, I remember your dad coming to pay his last respects to my father, who was resting at my house. He told me that he remembered watching my father walk by his house in his trooper uniform. (On his way to catch the train no doubt. He was stationed in B.C.) He said he looked very handsome.  Your father had to be around 5 or 6.  I'm glad he shared that memory with me.
My condolences to you, Jennie and his much loved grandson, Wesley, and to all his family and friends.
Our thoughts are with you, neighbor.

My deepest condolences to the the family and friends of Mr. Monture. I met him working on family history at the genealogy group at Six Nations. He was a true gentleman and made me feel very welcome to the territory. I worked on a project with him researching a soldier that his mother nursed overseas which he was very pleased with the outcome. I treasure those memories and hold him in my heart.
