As Elected Chief... Haǫgweh diyo:kę'. As soon as he was elected; the tables turned for the better, in our efforts in setting up Gawenni:yo School. He called me and had our team, join him in Toronto, at the Offices of Indian Affairs (INAC) to meet with Ontario's, Regional Director General.

Elected Chief William Montour: had us make our pitch (with our feasibility study) for the Immersion School to RDG Wouters. We Caucused in separate rooms. Thirty Minutes the RDG remerged in front of our caucus stating: "from this day forward, your school will be recognized with funded".

That day, William demonstrated and we witnessed: 'Self Government in Action'.

That is one of his many legacies, I am sure. For those of us who have worked for our community for decades to ensure our Languages remain a predominant 'health determinant' for our Onkwehonweh Civilization we say: Nya:węh gowah Bill.....Sa Tsa Gǫ ...on your safe journey back home..

On behalf of the Assembly of First Nations Chiefs Committee on Housing and Infrastructure we send our sincerest condolences to Pam and family. Bill was our Chair for our AFN Chiefs Committee on Housing and Infrastructure around 2007. During that time and on an ongoing basis he was a strong advocate for better conditions for First Nations especially for better housing and community infrastructure. His leadership and advice was much appreciated.

There are so many memories going through my mind when I think about the times I shared with Chief Bill Montour. What I learned about the man is that he shot from the hip, no nonsense, straight to the point. I never had to ask him twice what he meant. He was clear. He understood the people, everyone from those struggling the most to those who were doing well and he could relate to all of them. He also knew how to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of others as he did when his Council nominated my girl Sasha for the Lincoln Alexander Award for community service and she won it. He even attended on the day she received the Award in Parliment. He also stayed committed to working with and for the people right up to his last days. We were lucky to have him and I for one will miss the wealth of information he would always be pleased to share and his quick humour.

Condolences to Pam, to the family and to our community on this monumental loss.

Please extend my condolences on the death of Bill to his son Darren and his sister Ruby and other members of his family. Bill and I went all through high school together and shared many a laugh in the process. Ruby was also in high school at the same time. Unfortunately, I didn't see his death notice until January 17. May he rest in peace.
