Verna Josephine Smith (née Hill) – “Bwootsie”

October 6, 1949 – November 8, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Verna Josephine Smith (Bwootsie), née Hill, on November 8, 2025, at her home in Ohsweken, Ontario, at the age of 76.

Born on October 6, 1949, Verna lived a vibrant and generous life rooted in family, community, and service. She is lovingly remembered by her children Carole, Carla, and Derek (Ashlee); her grandchildren Aicha, Djamel, Daelon (Olivia), Caius, Raynee and Rodderek; and her great-grandchildren  Sophia, Finn, and Declyn. She was Auntie and Great Auntie to numerous nieces and nephews.

Verna is also survived by her siblings Scott (Mary), Gunner (Dianne), Cheryl, Brenda (the late Harry), Andrea, Tammy (Carmen), and Justine (Sher). She was predeceased by her siblings Erma (the late Frank), Joyce, Loretta, Guy, Jub, (Sandi), Roger (Tammy), Ken (Tye), Fran (Harold), Annette, Terry (Jason), and Verna’s former husband Marty.

Throughout her life, Verna wore many hats, working in various roles both on Six Nations and beyond. But her true calling was bringing people together. Whether organizing family gatherings, hosting euchre tournaments, or planning holiday celebrations, Verna created spaces filled with laughter, warmth, and love.

Her generosity extended far beyond her family. Verna was a steadfast supporter of her church, the local food bank, and long time supporter of the Miles to Go Cancer Group on Six Nations. She never hesitated to lend a helping hand, and her spirit of service touched many lives.

Verna is resting at home at 212 Chiefswood Road, Six Nations. Visitation will be Sunday, November 9, 2025, after 1:00pm, with funeral services to follow on Monday, November 10, 1:00pm. Cremation and a private burial will follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to “The Miles to Go Cancer Group,” whose support meant so much to Verna and her loved ones. E-transfers may be sent to milestogogroupsn@gmail.com with the note “In memory of Verna Smith.”

Now, it’s time for Verna to go play cards with her siblings—they’re holding her seat and keeping her drink cold.

She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
