Our beloved son, brother and father of three children passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side at the Hamilton General Hospital on Friday April 14, 2023 at the age of 44 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the dearly loved son of Edward Hedican and Mary-Ann Cheesequay and loving father of Shauna, Taya and Hadrian . He will be deeply missed by his sisters Tara, Celeena and Maya and brother Michael, his aunts Helen and Helga, as well as nieces and nephews Tomas, Aaron, Eddie, Xavier, Penelope, and Anthony.

Shaun was a well known woodland style artist, hunter, woodsman as well as an avid sportsman. He is a member of the Eabametoong First Nation of northern Ontario and the Loon Clan. As a teenager he attended John F. Ross High School in Guelph where he graduated from the French immersion program as well as excelling in various sports such as rugby, football and baseball. Later he graduated from the Police Foundations program at Mohawk College. In the summer of 2009 Shaun moved to Toronto where he began his painting career. After this educational experience Shaun decided to move to Rocky Bay in northern Ontario where his daughters were born and began a successful career as an artist focusing primarily on Anishinaabe themes. Shaun was passionate about empowering and advocating for Indigenous people, hosting many youth workshops and speaking on art panels. Shaun’s stoic presence and humour will be missed by many as we walk with his teachings forever in our hearts.

Celebrations of life will be held in both Guelph and Rocky Bay this summer. Details will be released closer to the date.

My condolence Ceelena,I know how hard it is to lose a brother at the young age. I lost mine at his age 44 and I was heartbroken but he was forever in my heart. I hope yours would be the same. Take care.

My deepest condolences to Shaun’s family. I went to grade school with Shaun in the 1980’s. I remember our time together as children and all the great times we had. He was a great person when we were young and I wish I would have known him as an adult as well.
