  Maria Licia Santone

November 24, 1926 - January 4, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Maria Licia Santone announce her passing at West Haldimand General Hospital on January 4th, 2023.  With family at her side, Maria passed peacefully at the age of 96. Beloved wife of the late Umberto (49 years) who passed in 1996,  loving mother of Camillo (Judy), cherished Nonna of Bryan (Ilana) and Paul (Minghui), and Great Nonna to Hannah, Leah, Adam, and Luca.  She is predeceased by her parents Melanino and Adalina Tucci, Sisters Liera (Palmarino) Panara, Olympia (Domenico) Torto, and brothers Carmen (Bionda) Tucci and Dante Tucci.  She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Canada and Italy.  In 1955, Maria immigrated to Canada from Bucchianico, Italy with Camillo, to join Umberto in Hagersville.  Maria worked hard to create a new and prosperous life for her family and often provided a home for family and friends who were visiting, or immigrating from Italy.  She loved to cook, bake, and crochet, and was exceptional in each.  While her award-winning vegetable and flower gardens were her pride and joy, her main focus was on providing for her family, and doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Maria is remembered by her family and friends as someone of great strength, generosity, and kindness.  The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Anson Place who worked so hard to make her feel at home.
Visitation will take place at the Hyde & Mott Chapel of RHB Anderson Funeral Homes, 60 Main St. S., Hagersville, on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A funeral Mass to follow from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 94 Main St. S., Hagersville. In lieu of flowers, donations to Diabetes Canada or the West Haldimand General Hospital would be sincerely appreciated by the family. www.rhbanderson.com

Dear Cam, Judy and family,
I just returned from my moms place and told her the news. She was heartbroken. We both had a little cry and then
Started talking about our memories with her. My mom told me that if she ran into a problem with a crochet pattern she was working on, off she went to see her best friend, who could always solve the issue. She taught me some stitches too, on the occasions that we would visit together. Her garden was the most amazing thing to behold-and I asked her -what’s the secret? Love, time , patience, fertilizer and water -simple right? We remembered when my brother and I and my mom went to Italy and were welcomed at her family’s home. We ate so many figs…that we had problems later!
She was a strong woman, both physically and mentally, and we are lucky to have her and my mom and all their friends as our role models.
There were many recipes that my mom and Licia traded-she was an amazing baker. And she was a good friend to my mom-all those days picking tomatoes and cucumbers together and talking about their problems, they supported each other.
She will be missed.
May you memories sustain you. Anita, Jamnes and Rose (junior) Rosina Zante
