Maria Luigia (Gina) Moretti
May 7, 1930 to December 30, 2022

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Maria Luigia (Gina) Moretti at The Meadows LTC, Ancaster on December 30, 2022. Gina passed away unexpectedly but peacefully with her daughter by her side at the age of 92. Beloved wife of Mario (2018) for 64 years. Loving mother of Lucy, and Harry (2021) (Maryanne). Cherished Nonna of Ava and Adriano. She is survived by her loving sister-in-laws Mary Marfisi, Francesca Caravaggio (Florindo) and Giovina Mattuci. She was predeceased by her parents Filippo and Angelica Marfisi, sisters Verina (Nicolo) DiTotto, Marina (Nicolo) Veri and brother Enzo Marfisi, as well as sister-in-laws Concetta (Vito) Giannantonio, Ginesia (Galliano) Sisti and brother-in-law Italino Moretti. Survived also by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in Canada and Italy. Gina immigrated to Canada in 1954. She began working in Canada immediately undertaking a variety of different occupations but the one she shined at the most was that of homemaker. Gina excelled at every task she attempted. She was an excellent seamstress, from fine lingerie to the tailoring of coats and everything in between. She had a green thumb extraordinaire, both for her vegetable and flower gardens. Her large gardens were a great sense of accomplishment, and many reaped the rewards of her gardening skills. She was a master baker and a fantastic cook. If Gina was visiting you for pleasure or business, you were most likely to receive a sampling of her pizzelles. And those of us within her inner circle enjoyed her fabulous spaghetti sauce and amazing pizza. She was most proud of her War Time Stories which were published in The Haldimand Press, November 2010 edition. This was a recounting of all the hardships she endured during the war in Italy and her reconnection with a Canadian Soldier in Hagersville. A remarkable twist of fate that she had the good fortune to meet him again many years after the war. Gina was tiny but mighty. She left an unforgettable impression on all she met. She was a giving soul with a big heart. Her positivity and wonderful outlook on life carried her through many hardships in her lifetime. But she never complained once. A big thank you to the wonderful staff at The Meadows who lovingly looked after “Maria” for the last two and a half years. All can attest as to how much she loved to play bingo, win vouchers and purchase chocolates for the staff. We know she will be missed tremendously by all. She is now reunited with Mario and Harry and can finally rest at peace.

Visitation will take place at the Hyde & Mott Chapel of RHB Anderson Funeral Homes, 60 Main St. S., Hagersville on Wednesday January 4th, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 94 Main St. S., Hagersville on Thursday January 5th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Assistance Program (CAP) or the West Haldimand General Hospital would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

Love you more!

Lucy, Maryanne, Ava and Adriano ... To know Gina was to love her. She was just adorable, and loved everyone, especially kids. She was always interested in what our kids were doing, and she looked right into your eyes with her whole heart, and held your hand so tightly with her super-soft hands. Tiny and mighty is exactly right. She was an amazing lady with the most beautiful heart, her family was everything, and she was everything to them too. You were so fortunate to have such an incredible little lady as your matriarch, and living so close together was perfect for the bond she had with you, Ava and Adriano. You had a wonderful Nonna. She sure will be missed, and always be remembered. Rest in Peace sweet little Gina, I sure did enjoy, respect, and appreciate you. Love You Forever.

from the first time I met her in the late 80's to the last time I saw her in 2021, she was a genuine person. I remember the first time she made me dinner and I vowed to always wear stretch pants to dinner after that. her cooking was amazing, simple and delicious! she also made me my first expresso with sambucca. her garden was legendary and I always got take out to go home which I would share with Justine the other italian. how blessed was she with her wonderful family and I know we now have another special angel upstairs looking out for us all. my love to Lucy, Maryanne, Ave and Adriano. Gina was the Best of the best.

For all the neighborhood children growing up with Lucy and Harry Gina was like our second mother. She was always there with encouragement and treats and always providing a safe place to be. She wouldn’t hesitate to offer a little discipline when needed also! Always so kind and caring she is just a little bit responsible for who we have all become. Much more than just our neighbor and friend. Thank you Mother. Nice job!!
