Louise-Annette Laidlaw

It is with great sadness that I announce on May 16, 2021 that Louise-Annette Laidlaw entered in the care of our Heavenly Father.  She was a wonderful wife to Brian for almost 55 years.  She also leaves behind her beloved brother Joe (Linda) Maggio and nieces and nephews, Darin, and Gregory Maggio, Tracy (Mike) Weston Tanya (Brad) Clarke, and Daren (Monica Woodbyrne) MacDonald.  She was a great teacher who loved her students like her family and they loved her in return.  She was also an excellent coach in Track, and Tennis.  Her teaching career spanned 55 years in High Schools from Orillia, Dunnville, Hamilton, and Cayuga.  She was a ferocious competition on the tennis court and also an excellent shot as a member of the Caledonia Rifle Club.  She was also an accomplished cook and baker drumming up treats for friends and the less fortunate.  Also many of her secret recipes will remain secret.  A private family service will be held at Hyde & Mott Chapel of R.H.B. Anderson Funeral Homes (2020) Ltd., 60 Main St. S., Hagersville on Wednesday May 19, 2021 followed by interment at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Caledonia.  As an expression of sympathy donations may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation.  www.rhbanderson.com

My heart hurts to know that such a wonderful woman has passed away. Mrs. Laidlaw was more than a teacher, she was a mentor. I loved having her for French. My son Caleb was lucky enough to have her for Geography. I think of the Laidlaws often as I remember seeing that little red corvette come zooming down Erie Street in Selkirk, with the tip of Mrs. Laidlaws head poking up above the steering wheel. When my Mom was ill, they showed up on my doorstep with a pecan pie for her because Mrs. Laidlaw saw her walking in town and new something was “off”. It was a beautiful gesture that I will never forget.
Mrs. Laidlaw; may you fly high with that beautiful heart, smile and endless cans of ginger ale and straws.
Thank you to the both of the Laidlaws for being such loving people.

The Laidlaw’s have etched themselves into the hearts and minds of so many generations of students at CSS. Having taught my parents, I was lucky to have both Mrs. Laidlaw as my French teacher and Mr. Laidlaw as my geography teacher. I will never forget her lovely gestures, the times I came to school to drop off assignments for Mr. Laidlaw with a toddler in tow and Mrs. Laidlaw would rush out with whatever she could find in her cupboard, a pinwheel, a cookie. Mr. Laidlaw, you have my deepest sympathies.

There’s not many stand out things from back in high school. But some things stood out, especially still till this day. Mainly you and your husband, Mr Laidlaw as my high school teachers (French and geography). Everyone knew you both. Very memorable. You even taught some of my family. You were my French teacher and also my detention teacher which I spent most of my high school days in. Most big projects in French class had to do with designing posters. My posters always involved Eminem/8mile. You always said you enjoyed my artwork and to this day, I still have all that artwork as a keepsake, from your French class. Been awhile, but during high school, and years after highschool, I always ran into you and your husband at grocery stores. That grocery store on the corner of Mohawk and Upper James in Hamilton or Foodland in Cayuga. We always chatted for 15-20mins down the aisle. If I remember right, when you loaded your groceries up, it was always the red corvette you both drove. I will never forget you. Thank you. May you Rest In Peace and my condolences to Mr Laidlaw. Thank you both.

Mrs. Laidlaw was one of my favourite teachers at CayugaSS. She was incredibly strict, but fair. The only time I forgot to do my homework, she gave me a detention but looked so forlorn doing it that I felt terrible and never did it again. It really made me see that she was strict, but had great empathy and understanding for her students. As a result, I learned an awful lot under her care. I'm now a teacher and I look back fondly on my role models from high school, and I take all their strengths and learn to engage them in my own teaching. Thank you to Mrs. Laidlaw, who not only made me a better student, but who also made me a better teacher.

PS: Mr. Laidlaw - I'm so sorry for your loss. By the way, you were one of my favourite teachers as well. The two of you were the most awesome pair. You taught me how to use humour to engage my students' interests. Thank you both.

My heart was in pieces when I heard. Louise was such a beautiful and giving person and a treasured gift to my children. She left an indelible mark on their memories and then their hearts. My daughter Kattera once told me she never would have made it through high school without her. She said that Louise was the reason that she learned to love herself for who she was. She was constantly surprising my kids with beautiful gestures, and me as well. When my son came home and visited the school the first place he headed was Louise's classroom. Every trip that we went on the girls had to buy and bring back a present for Mr and Mrs Laidlaw. You will be truly missed Louise. You have no idea just how much. We will miss our dinners and your wonderful pies. But most of all we will miss your beautiful and giving heart. Please let me know if you need anything Brian. You're in my prayers.

Mr. Laidlaw,
My sincere condolences to you and your family. You and Mrs Laidlaw are perfect examples of exceptional teachers with vastly different methods but both warrant respect from students and other faculty members. I still cannot refer to either of you by your first names; you will always be Mr. and Mrs. I regularly referred to you both as examples when raising my own kids. I had a 'healthy' fear of Mrs Laidlaw's French class but it was impossible not to learn. Outside of class she was funny and so warm hearted. She will be sadly missed. I hope you take some comfort in knowing how much she has touched so many lives.
I am grateful to have had her for a teacher.

Brian , lsabel and I want to let you know that we are thinking about you at this sad time. The loss of a partner of over 50 years is hard to even comprehend.
Time and distance have kept us apart part for over 50 years so our memories of Louise go back to the time when we all were in our late teens and early 20s. We fondly remember Louise’s joy of life and and especially the wild and colourful tent dresses that she used to wear..
The testimonials from your students should give you great comfort. You both have made so many positive contributions to their lives.
Isabel wants to let Joey know she is thinking of him at this difficult time as she remembers him from their grade school days in Hagersville.
Take care of yourself and hopefully we can get together when we can all travel again.

Brian, I have so many fond memories of Mrs. Laidlaw (and you!!!) from my time at CSS. I'm sad with you; praying that you'll know the Lord's comfort and peace. You're going to be okay, and she's gone to a place far better than Calaboogie: that big yellow vibrator in the sky. Grace and peace, brother.

Brian and family, my deepest condolences. My introduction to Louise was grade 9 French class. She cared so much about me as a student, she demanded discipline in her classroom which was probably a good thing for me. Louise was my tennis coach at high school and we later became mixed doubles partners at the Cayuga Tennis club where we won a number of club tournaments. We had a rivalry with Brian and his partner Angela; we had so much fun, lots of laughs and to say Louise was competitive is a bit of an understatement. I experienced Louise’s culinary skills when I had the privilege of attending Brian’s birthday golf get together.
Louise was kind, generous and a great teacher.
God bless and rest in peace.

Brian,

I am very sorry to hear about Mrs. Laidlaw. She was a diamond in the rough with her genuine, spunky, no nonsense attitude!
I always appreciated how excited she was to see me and chat over lunch when I visited Cayuga Secondary, post graduation.
She would provide so much encouragement and positivity. She truly cared about her students, and I am so thankful to have been one of them.
Sending many hugs and positive thoughts your way ❤

She cared about her students. I will never forget her. Sending lots of hugs your way.

I was sorry to hear about Louise's passing. I personally didn't have Louise for a teacher but my children did. She was a wonderful teacher and loved all the children she taught or coached. What a wonderful legacy Louise has left behind. I would chat with her and Brian after mass when they attended St. Stephen's in Cayuga, and Louise always made a point of asking how my youngest son was. She was a thoughtful and caring person. I know she loved to bake and always made a point of bringing something for our priest each week. Our family sends their sympathies, prayers and hugs to you Brian. You were so thoughtful, caring and loving to her, I will always see you heading out rain or shine, snow or wind to warm her car. We know you will miss her dearly. God Bless you at this difficult time. The Aldridge Family

I just heard about the loss of my former teacher. Mme Laidlaw was an influential force in choosing a career as a French teacher. For my friend Stephanie Pickering as well. Our deepest condolences, Mr. Laidlaw. Merci Mme. Vous nous manquerez.

From Art & Josie & the O'Neill Family, our deepest sympathies Brian. All of our children were either yours or Louise's students or were involved with the sports that you both coached, and always heard about how much they liked both of you and shared in some of the laughs that they had. We will keep you in our prayers during this most difficult time. Eternal rest grant unto her...

I was going through old pictures from Hagersville Public School (1955) and came across our grade 8 class picture on the last day of school. Louise and I were friends all through public and high school and our mothers were close friends as well. But the picture I carry in my memory is of your wedding day and this is how I think of her. She was such a beautiful bride and very much in love. I'm sorry for your loss. She will always be young in my mind. I'm sure you carry thousands of wonderful images in your mind and heart. May those memories and wonderful images give you comfort and help you find peace in the days ahead.
