I was informed of this news late yesterday, and it took me some time to reflect last evening.

My Heartfelt Condolences to all of you during this time... and under this pandemic cloud.
It makes it so hard not to be there in person.

Know that I have such great cherished memories growing up with you all
with Momsy as head of the Household and Restaurant. Some good laughs to be sure.

Kieth Lickers will be best known as and Educator and for his work, working within the Ministry of Education to convince them 'our ways of knowing' was just as
valid and legitimate as English Education.

For m, he was a great ally to my work in/for Languages from his long tenure, in the MOWAT Block at the Ministry of Education, Toronto.

Many, may not know he was a great Advocate for our languages! It was his advocacy work that moved/convinced the Ministry of Education that 'Native Language'
should be taught within Ontario Schools (1980's) and should be accredited alongside French.

I can honestly say he was a great Mentor of mine, in my work at the Woodland Cultural Centre, from his Toronto Offices (over our many hours of conversation by phone) in the early days of our work together; to save, stabilize and maintain our Onkwehonweh languages. He was able to work from the inside, and I from the outside, with the founding of Gawenni:yo. These were early days of 'Indian Control of Indian Education'. We did not just talk the talk, we actually tried to walk the talk!

Thank you Keith, for your time working with me as a mentor and inspiring me as a former Teacher of mine ... way, way back when.

I will always remember your early hot rod cars too... especially that Green Charger !

Rest in Peace my Friend and Mentor!

I was saddened to learn of Keith's passing. My condolences to Phyllis and the whole family at this time of loss. I recently found some old pictures of Keith and our "gang" in our acting days as part of the Six Nations Pageant. In the early years we spent a lot of the evenings stumbling through the bush looking for firewood in the dark before we got promoted to be actors. It was the beginning of our history education in a much simpler time. Peace.

Heartfelt Condolences to Phyllis and Family on the passing of Keith.

One might say that Keith's family and my family grew up together - at Sour Springs Corner where, as kids, we all spent many a Saturday afternoon playing football or badminton in the orchard, 'moving-up' softball at the school or playing hockey on the local pond. I will never forget the Hallowe'en outfit that Keith wore for Trick or Treating every year! We would see him coming through the orchard with his wine-coloured woman's coat with fur on the collar, his funny little granny hat with a couple of feathers, his funny mask and his big rubber boots! Keith always had a great sense of humour. I had the opportunity to work with Keith on other education- and council-related activities in the last little while. Keith was a great guy to work with - one who spoke him mind but also really listened to what others had to say. In terms of his work at the Ministry of Ed, I have to say that he took Native Education a long way in Ontario. Over time, others of us followed his lead.

We, at Sour Springs Corner, will miss Keith as we have missed the others of his family.

For so many of the past forty something years since my dad introduced us when they worked together at the Ministry of Education,I have felt honoured to have continued the conversation with such a dedicated educator. We remember fondly our times working with Keith over the many years of his inspired career - early on when he was Executive Director at the Woodland Cultural Centre and through his lengthy time at the Ontario Ministry of Education. His dedication and leadership were hallmarks of his efforts to develop and implement relevant and meaningful Indigenous education policy. Keith was the consummate professional, always respected and respectful of others. He provided leadership in his quiet, modest way. He will be missed.
