I only know her as "Jenny". Jenny was my mother's live in companion back in the late 1970's and early 1980's here in Oklahoma, US. I will always love the way they helped each other in their own ways. My mother loved her as a daughter. RIP Jenny Burning. You will always be remembered as a loving, peaceful & helpful lady!

I'm so sad to hear of this news. Jenny came to Oklahoma when I was a child to go to college. My mom loved her as if she was her own daughter and she was like a sister to me. She was very kind, sweet and fun. Everyone that has been touched by her are in my thoughts.

I want to share my heartfelt (spirit) condolences to Jaynane's family, friends and loved ones at her sudden passing. I met Jaynane as a colleague at the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres in the early 1990's, as part of the Friendship Centre Movement and also as a traditional singer. I'm Mi'kmaq and though we came from very different traditions with the drum, rattles and songs, we both came from matriarchal societies. We acknowledged and respected each other as women warriors, aunties and song carriers. I always admired Jaynane's calm and kind ways with the people. She was a tireless advocate for our children, youth and families. I was also amazed about the fact that she commuted from Six Nations to Toronto each day dedicating herself to the work at the OFIFC. I was particularly intrigued when she conducted international work to end violence against children including child labor. She inspired me to be brave and think about the world beyond our 'reserve' boarders and trust the traditions of our ancestors.

The last time I saw Jaynane was at an annual Haudenosaunee Sing hosted at the Oneida First Nation Long House in the summer of 2011. We visited, she introduced me to several of the grandmothers and aunties and provided a quick primer about the singing society tradition so I could enjoy the event. It was an honour and privilege to know Jaynane. While we all grieve for Jaynane's sudden passing and try to adjust to this physical world without her, I think we can find some measure of solace by honouring her good life, helping her journey onto spirit world and knowing she's with the ancestors now.
