Harry Philip Moretti

We are broken hearted to announce the sudden passing on October 10, 2021 of Harry Philip Moretti who left us valiantly after a 7 year battle with cancer at the age of 60.  Dearest husband of 20 years and best friend of the love of his life, Maryanne.  Amazing father of Ava and Adriano.  Precious son of Gina (Maria) and the late Mario.   Much loved brother of Lucy.  Cherished son-in-law of Stella MacLean.  Beloved brother-in-law to Neil and Cheryle, Doug and Audrey and Gary and Lynn.  Special uncle to several nieces and nephews.  Admired and loved cousin to many, both in Italy and Canada.

In his 36 year employment at Stelco in Nanticoke, he was the epitome of work ethic and dedication, mentoring so many during his exemplary career.

Harry was an amazing soul who lived life to the fullest. From an early age, he began drumming and carried on with his love of music and dancing with his band, National Slag. They recently celebrated 29 years of playing together at all types of venues and were especially known for their annual Halloween Bashes.  He loved to travel and backpacked through Europe for 3 months in his early 20’s.  From diving with sharks in Hawaii to sailing along the Adriatic Coast in Italy, Harry enjoyed many travel excursions. New York City was a favourite destination which he enjoyed experiencing with many friends and family.  He loved his ROC’N 56 Chev Bel Air which he had meticulously restored to its original state over many years.  Harry graciously provided his car to many brides and grooms for their wedding day but none was more special than his own wedding.

Harry had friends all over the world and he will be missed tremendously.  He had a gift of befriending perfect strangers by simply striking up a conversation anytime, anywhere. His gift of storytelling was legendary.  He loved fine dining, good wine, old scotch, along with his signature gift of Godiva chocolates and Veuve Clicquot champagne.  He read voraciously and was an excellent writer as most knew from his “Cancer Chronicles”. Harry began writing about his cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2014 to present.  The ever positive Harry never once lamented his diagnosis of cancer but was the poster individual for “living with cancer”, battling reoccurrences of the disease and all the treatments involved many times over.  His Cancer Chronicles were intended to educate everyone to the reality of living with cancer.  Sadly, he did not have a chance to write his Final Chapter.   We know Harry is drumming up a storm in heaven and are grateful he is finally free from the ravages of cancer.   Let’s raise a glass of champagne to Harry for his always positive attitude and never ending quest for living life large and rocking it out.

A big thank you to all the many “heroes” who looked after Harry over the years, including Dr. Drijber, Dr. Major, Dr. Murali and the C3 Oncology Ward team at Juravinski Hospital.   Special thanks to nurse Melanie Walker who was always there for Harry and made his final days more comfortable.   In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Juravinski Hospital, Juravinski Cancer Centre or to the Cancer Assistance Program (CAP).

Visitation will take place at the Hyde & Mott Chapel of R.H.B. Anderson Funeral Homes, 60 Main St. S., Hagersville on Thursday, October 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 15th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Covid rules will apply.  Funeral service will be by invitation only on Saturday.  Internment to follow.

In capturing Harry’s spirit and his love of movies, a quote from the latest James Bond movie, “No Time to Die”, seems fitting. “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist.  I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them.  I shall use my time.”

I was so sorry to learn of Harry's passing. I was lucky enough to enjoy getting to chat with him as he came on a couple of field trips back when the kids were in elementary school. We offer our sincerest condolences during this sad time, and pray that over time, the sadness felt now will turn to remembering all of the better moments and happy memories.

Harry was the best. I met Harry in 1989 in Star Records on Ottawa Street, since we both love to chat we did and continued to see music and drink espresso together. Harry and I had a lot of coffee meetups over the past few years when he was in Hamilton for appointments. I'm going to miss that guy. If you knew Harry you were a lucky person.

Dearest Gina, Lucy , MaryAnne and family,
I send my heartfelt condolences to you on this very sad occasion. It has been a long time since we have had contact, and this news comes as quite a shock. Harry was a very enigmatic person and I believe lived his life as your epitaph described. It is a beautiful tribute to his life, cut way too short.
I remember the day Ava and my daughter Rose met and played together and I met MaryAnne. I am thinking of all of you during this very difficult time.

Dear Maryanne, Ava & Adriano,

Our hearts truly go out to you and your family at this time of sorrow. Harry being someone so special will never be forgotten. He was a true gift to anyone who had the pleasure of his time. We had much in common from music to cars and he always had my back literally when I was on the mic. I was proud to call him "brother" each time we met.
Seeing you both at the last National Slag reunion in 2019 was especially memorable and inspirational as he played like it was 1992, didn't miss a beat. Harry "Stix" Moretti will be welcomed at the great gig in the sky.

Harry and I shared an old soul so fitting we offer the words of the chairman "You only go around once, but if you play your cards right, once is enough. – Frank Sinatra

My condolences to Harry’s family
I knew Harry from HSS in the the mid 70s and also from Stelco/USSteel as Fireman/Security. I have nothing but good memories of talking to Harry at work and on the streets of Hagersville. Harry was such a beacon of sunshine EVERY time we chatted. My only hope is too be half the man Harry was, he inspired me to look past the cloudy days and look to positive things. His passing is a great loss and he will be missed. I would like to say to the family to be strong and know Harry’s memory will live long. I was shocked to find out recently we lost another good soul in Peter Knocke. These blows have made me reflect on friendships from my past and how vulnerable we are. God bless Harry’s family

I met Harry in the early 80s at Ballinger's nightclub, rocking a great leather jacket, I recall - always a snappy dresser. We had recently reconnected at a dinner party where I met the lovely Maryanne. Harry, always a brilliant raconteur, retold the story of their meeting and we all hung on his every word. It was the stuff movies are made of. His positivity and lust for life, even as he informed us of his cancer, was so inspiring. Plans were made for the next dinner party but then came Covid. That dinner will have to wait. Harry was a true gentlemen and one of a kind.
Deepest condolences to Maryanne, Ava and Adriano. Godspeed Harry - you will be missed.

Such sad news to receive on this "Thanksgiving" weekend. But we give "Thanks" for having Harry in our lives. His upbeat personality was hard to beat and he was always so positive about his life, especially these past 7 years. I loved our chats about "Rush" especially Neil who he idolized. My hope is that they are drumming together up there in Rock n Roll heaven. And his car. Oh his precious car. When he brought me the magazine that he was featured in it was a very proud moment for him. Keeping you Maryanne, Ava, Adriano, Gina and Lucy in our prayers. He will be missed by so many but if you were lucky enough to have known him his memory will live on forever in our hearts. Sending much love to you all.

Maryanne, Ava and Adriano,

Just want to take the time to wish your family my family's deepest condolences. Harry was one of my dearest friends. I was very fortunate to meet Harry at work and work hand in hand with him for many years. I learned many things from him that I still use today. With that great friendship, it evolved to my family and yours becoming friends. There is no doubt that Harry was called to early, and that he will be missed by my family. I am very grateful that I have many memories of Harry that I will keep close. Again, our condolences

Dear Maryanne, Ava and Eva,
What a wonderful man that Harry—making people smile where ever he went, spreading his boundless energy, kindness and happiness around like fairy dust. He is a model for all of us to be a little bit more like Harry, every day. As a member of the “National Slagette” groupie club I can say that some of my best memories are linked to Harry’s drumbeat, both symbolically and in real time.
Wishing you the best possible path forward, with Harry in your hearts and minds to propel you.

Our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies. Words truly cannot convey the grief and sorrow myself and Nancy we are feeling right now. Reflecting on Harry's life, in one way or another, he was always a positive influence in ours. More notably, we can't forget that Harry orchestrated the meeting of my wife Nancy, which, in turn, resulted in the birth of our two wonderful sons! I truly admired Harry's contagious energy and zest for life, not to mention his great taste for and encyclopedic knowledge of music. Playing in our band National Slag for almost 30 years with Harry was truly an honor and filled with sooo many amazing memories. Harry may have left the building but his beat will live on forever in our hearts.

Harry had a zest for life that was contagious. Growing up in Hagersville, he could always be counted on to plan a night on the town in the big city, with the curated tunes playing as we rolled down the highway. Later on, I discovered that he was also a great writer and philosopher as he chronicled the ups and downs of his illness with wit and dignity. I will remember him as a cherished friend, a gentleman and a proud family man. Cheers my friend!

Maryanne, Ava, Adriano, precious Gina and Lucy... Our hearts are shattered with the loss of your beautiful Harry, the nicest guy in the world I think. Always a gentleman, always interested, when he said "How are you?" he was interested in the answer. He adored his family, you were his world. I think everyone in this community knew Harry, and he was truly loved by all - a finer man could not be found. I did not have as much time getting to know Harry as so many did, yet I am devastated by his loss. Mark is so sorry he didn't get out for that beer... The entire Community is grieving his loss, he left a huge footprint in everyone's heart, and will absolutely be missed forever. GodSpeed sweet gentle Harry, we will be watching for you to shine down on us. We will all be there for Maryanne and your two amazing kids, your Mom and Lucy, in any way they need us. Our deepest condolences to Maryanne and the family. It was the saddest of news to hear of Harry’s passing but brought back so many wonderful memories of a true ray of sunshine that was Harry. He was a true gentleman, a friend to all and an example of how we should be to one another. We had the great pleasure of working with him for many years which afforded us the opportunity to see and talk to him regularly. Outside of work, Bruce enjoyed being his teammate in the Stelco hockey league, where again, he exuded fun and great sportsmanship. We last saw Harry and family camping down in Port Dover, throwing a baseball around, and had the opportunity to meet Maryanne and catch up on how things were. As usual, Harry was his positive cheery self, loving life and determined that cancer would not slow him down. We were blessed to have known Harry. Rest In Peace my friend.
