Brian Francis

Brian Francis (June 15, 1948 - October 16, 2022) died suddenly at Juravinski Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Although a very private man, Brian loved his walks and impromptu meetings with friends and neighbours. He was kind, gentle, and funny, finding humour in the most unlikeliest of places. Those who knew Brian also respected his quick intelligence and his tenacity. For the last 30 years, Brian worked tirelessly to expose and confront the ways Ontario car accident victims are denied justice by insurers, their “hired gun” medical examination providers, and the lawyers who profit from litigating in a system seemingly designed to benefit all stakeholders except the accident victim. Brian’s extensive knowledge of Ontario’s auto insurance regime, its systemic shortcomings, and some of its shiftier players was the result of personal experience as the partner of an auto insurance victim which launched him into years of dogged research. Brian’s analysis, insights and advocacy efforts were valued by many (and regrettably not so much by others). Brian will be missed by his partner, Janet Hough, as well as his friends and fellow reform advocates. Cremation has taken place.  www.rhbanderson.com

Brian was a tireless champion for accident victims and a huge thorn in the side of sleazy and sometimes corrupt players who conspired to cheat accident victims of their just entitlements. He is and will be missed.

Brian had a wicked sense of humour and he was often the bright spot in my day. He was a dedicated person who meant to make a difference in the lives of people who had been injured in car crashes and then run over again when their insurance company would fail them. He helped me and many other people. I will always be grateful for his help. He will be missed.

Brian contacted me at the Toronto Star after I started exploring the arcane world of car insurance providers and their measly payouts to accident victims. He kept in touch with me for many years, enduring I was informed and sympathetic to the need for exposing abuses by personal injury lawyers, hired gun doctors and the Ontario government’s continuing support of the insurance industry’s need to rewrite the rules in its favour. Sorry you won’t be getting in touch any more, Brian. I’ll miss you.

Brian will be deeply missed. He was a good friend and I will miss his witty comments, his devilish attitude and the great conversations we had. He stirred the pot relentlessly and his work to protect the interests of Ontario car crash survivors brought attention to issues that might not have ever seen the light of day without him. My condolences to Brian's family and friends.
