So sad to hear the news of Bob’s passing. He was a wonderful friend and colleague for almost 40 years. Bob was such a loving father, son and family man and his second love was his riding. He cared so much for others and when he was in your court, you had a winner! Bob, you are truly loved and missed by all. Rest In Peace.

I remember cousin Bob telling me, when we were at a family gathering, that he was off to university.
I asked him why he wanted to be a politition and he told me he wanted to be the federal Minister of Agriculture.
He was a determined man who had a wonderful personality. Our thoughts and prayers are with David and Brian

It is with sadness that we heard of Bob's passing. Our primary connection with Bob was through his political office. We counted him as one of the "Statesmen" of political representation, where principle and people were his top priorities. May God grant peace and blessings to Joan and the family as they mourn his loss, but with the good memories of the significant difference his made in the lives of the people he represented.

Just learned of Bob's passing and are very saddened by his untimely death. He was a good friend and we followed with
much interest his amazing career from the day that he announced his intention to enter the political arena from our
home on Caithness St E. to his winning and ultimate appointment as Minister of Agriculture.

Several of us who worked for Bob in Ottawa were recently remembering the good times we all shared with Bob leading the country as minister through some of the worst agriculture crises of the day (avian influenza, BSE). Bob made the tough decisions that needed to be made to defend Canadian farmers and their families, and throughout it all, he was friendly, approachable, down to earth and did what he believed was right. It wasn’t easy and he fought hard for his riding, particularly tooth and nail for the support he secured for the region’s tobacco growers. Despite his sometime unpopular political battles, he was highly respected and liked in Ottawa circles. I am grateful to him for giving me an opportunity to learn about Canadian politics, support him as minister and MP for Haldimand-Norfolk, and most importantly become his friend. We will all miss him. On behalf of his ministerial staff in Ottawa, our sincere condolences to Joan and his family.

I am so sorry to hear of the illness and death of Bob Speller. He was one of the greatest elected supporters
of initiation of the Hagersville Secondary School Student Crime Stoppers Program at Hagersville Secondary School in 1993.
We all know the positive and significant impact that program has made on the career choices of HSS graduates including the late
Sgt. Andrew Harnett. Thanks Bob for your strong voice on behalf of Haldimand and especially Hagersville. You are missed but never forgotten.

I was Linda Cowen then when Bob and I made our way through high school. He was a year younger than me but I knew him well. I also worked with Doris, his mother at Sprucedale Youth Centre. A wonderful woman. I was so proud when I could say I knew a member of parliament personally and wished him well throughout his difficult choices with the mad cow disease. My sincere condolences to his family. This is a sad time.

My condolences to you and your family on the passing of Minister Speller. As a senior public servant I had the opportunity to work with many Ministers. Minister Speller was a true Parliamentarian who taught me a lot about serving one’s country. As his deputy minister, I saw him fight for his constituents and work tirelessly to make a difference.
He will be missed. He made a big difference in my life. I truly believe that he alone because of his skill at listening and negotiations was responsible for concluding one of the most significant policy reforms in agriculture…the agriculture policy framework (APF) which exists till today!
Sincerely

Bob, was a very good friend starting from our early public school days. We delivered newspapers together, were in Cubs and Scouts together and, later in life, I got involved with federal politics with Bob. I remember attending party conventions and meeting many MPs... fondest memory was meeting John Turner when he won the party nomination. Thanks Bob for the memories.

Joan and family, I am truly saddened by the passing of Bob, not only was he a great boss when I worked at the constituency office but he taught me so much more about what it meant to truly represent your community in government. Bob taught me to listen to the people as everyone had a story to tell and that is how you could make a difference. Working for him was a gift I will never forget as it started me on my path to where I am today in my career. I always thought of Bob as a second dad and he gave me so many opportunities to learn and he always listened to what I had to say. I will truly miss him and cherish all the good times we had. My parents Curtis and Sharon Hansford pass on their condolences as knowing Bob for over 30 years they were very sad to here of his passing as well. May Bob Rest In Peace with a new pair of running shoes.
